MALIBU, Calif. — After their successful 2022-23 seasons, women's tennis players
Savannah Broadus and
Janice Tjen were officially named ITA All-Americans, as announced by the organization on Monday.
In order to be an All-American in doubles, teams must either have a top-eight seed in the NCAA Doubles Tournament, reach the quarterfinals in the tournament or finish in the top-10 ITA doubles rankings of the season. Players earn All-American status in singles by earning a top 16 seed in the NCAA Singles Championship, advancing to the round of 16 or by finishing in the top 20 of the ITA singles rankings.
This year marks the second-consecutive season in which Broadus (Carrollton, Texas) and Tjen (Jakarta, Indonesia) earned All-American honors in doubles. As a top-16 seed in the NCAA Singles Tournament and one-half of the nation's top doubles team, Tjen is the first Wave to earn All-American honors in both singles and doubles since
Mayar Sherif achieved that feat in 2017.
In singles play, Tjen had a 26-9 overall record, including a 15-6 mark in dual singles play. Tjen, who was the 2023 WCC Player of the Year and a first-team all-conference selection in both singles and doubles, went 5-4 against nationally ranked competition in the spring. During the Waves' Super Regional run, Tjen clinched on court two for the Waves with a 7-5, 1-6, 6-1 win over #43 Eryn Cayetano of USC. As a top-16 seed in the NCAA Singles Tournament, Tjen fell in a marathon three-set loss to #24 Celia Belle-Mohr of Vanderbilt, who also earned All-American honors this year. Tjen checked in at #18 in the final ITA singles poll released on May 31.
Broadus and Tjen put together an impressive season as a doubles team, as they won an ITA National Championship title in the fall and carried that success over into the spring season. The duo went 33-7 on the season — including a 17-5 mark in dual play — with a 9-2 record against nationally ranked competition in dual singles play. Broadus and Tjen's season took off in non-conference play, as they beat the nation's #8 and #2 teams in the span of three weeks. The duo was named WCC Doubles Team of the Week seven times and was ranked #1 in the final ITA doubles poll.
During the NCAA Doubles Tournament, Broadus and Tjen easily dispatched Alexa Noel and Isabella Pfennig of Miami (Fla.) 6-1, 6-2 before falling in straight sets to eventual-national champions Fiona Crawley and Carson Tanguilig of North Carolina.
