SAN DIEGO Calif. — In a battle between two PCH Cup rivals for the West Coast Conference Championship title, the #7 Pepperdine Waves emerged victorious with a 4-0 sweep over #51 Loyola Marymount in San Diego on Saturday.
The win marked the Waves' (18-3, 7-0 WCC) ninth-straight WCC Championship title and its 31st WCC tournament title. Factoring in regular-season titles, the Waves have won 42 regular-season and tournament titles in program history. It's also the seventh WCC Championship title won under the direction of head coach Per Nilsson, who has an undefeated record as a head coach in WCC postseason play. Pepperdine hasn't lost a dual match against a conference opponent since the 2014-15 season.
Additionally, all six Waves earned spots on the WCC All-Tournament team. All three all-tournament doubles teams were from Pepperdine, plus #19 Savannah Broadus (Carrollton, Texas), #108 Nikki Redelijk (Windermere, Fla.) and #16 Janice Tjen (Jakarta, Indonesia) earned all-tournament honors in singles.
Pepperdine kept the upset-minded Lions (15-7, 7-2 WCC) at bay in doubles, as all three teams got out to big leads early. #32 Bunyawi Thamchaiwat (Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand) and Lisa Zaar (Stockholm, Sweden) got Pepperdine on the board first with a 6-2 win on court two, then Anna Campana (Hillsborough, Calif.) and Redelijk finished off the Lions with a 6-1 win on the third line.
Then in singles play, four of the five Waves jumped out to first-set wins. Redelijk clinched first with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 win on court five, then Tjen outlasted her opponent 6-4, 6-1 on court three to give Pepperdine a 3-0 lead. Broadus, a WCC All-First Team selection in singles with an undefeated record this season, would cinch the Waves' ninth-straight WCC Tournament on court two with a 6-0, 6-2 win.
