Pepperdine Wins WCC Regular Season Title on Senior Day

MALIBU Calif. — The #8 Pepperdine Waves won their eleventh-consecutive 2023 West Coast Conference regular season title with a 7-0 sweep over San Francisco at home on Friday.

Pepperdine (15-3, 6-0 West Coast Conference) never wavered in its match against the Dons (12-7, 4-3 WCC), as the Waves took the doubles point with ease and never looked back. Friday's win doubled as the Waves' Senior Day, as the team honored Lisa Zaar (Stockholm, Sweden), Bunyawi Thamchaiwat (Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand) and Carolyn Campana (Hillsborough, Calif.) prior to the match.

The doubles point went without a hitch. The nation's #1 doubles team of Janice Tjen (Jakarta, Indonesia) and Savannah Broadus (Carrollton, Texas) cruised to a 6-1 win past San Francisco's lone nationally ranked team: #87 Maria Martinez Vaquero and Sibran Chhabra. Anna Campana (Hillsborough, Calif.) and Nikki Redelijk (Windermere, Fla.) clinched the doubles point shortly thereafter.

Playing on her senior day, graduate senior Bunyawi Thamchaiwat got the Waves on the board first in singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win on court four. Fellow senior Lisa Zaar followed up with a 6-1, 6-1 win on court one before Broadus came back from trailing in the first set to notch a 6-3, 6-1 win on the third line. Her win officially clinched for the Waves, yet the rest of the matches were played out.

However, the Waves did not have to wait long to celebrate clinching the regular-season title. Redelijk and Campana won in straight sets in short succession on courts five and six, respectively. All eyes fell on Tjen on court two, who pulled ahead late to win 6-1, 7-5 and give Pepperdine its eleventh-consecutive regular-season conference title.
