GAINESVILLE, Florida – The #25 Pepperdine women's tennis program handled business in its first true road match of the season, defeating #15 Florida in a convincing 4-0 fashion on Friday afternoon at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex.
As the new top doubles team in the country,
Savannah Broadus (Carrollton, Texas) and
Janice Tjen (Jakarta, Indonesia) got Pepperdine (4-2) on the board with a 6-3 win on the top court. Courts two and three both were one game away from clinching doubles for the Waves, but it was court three's pair of
Anna Campana (Hillsborough, Calif.) and
Nikki Redelijk (Windermere, Fla.) who earned a 6-3 win to give Pepperdine a 1-0 lead.
Florida (5-2) had leads in a majority of the early first sets in singles, but it was Pepperdine who kept the foot on the gas and won five of six first sets. #29 Tjen doubled the lead for the Waves with a 6-3, 6-3 win on the top court over #61 Carly Briggs. #16 Broadus then won her fourth consecutive straight-set match, dispatching #83 Sara Dahlstrom 6-1, 6-2 on court three to bring Pepperdine within one court of a match victory.
To close out the match, Campana swept Emily De Oliveira 6-4, 6-3 on court six to wrap up the win for the Waves.
