#8 Pepperdine Goes Wire-to-Wire in Win Over #7 Virginia

SEATTLE, Washington – The #8 Pepperdine women's tennis program responded in a big way after losing four first sets in singles on Saturday afternoon, defeating #7 Virginia 4-1 at the Seattle Tennis Club in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships.

Doubles was lopsided in both directions to start, as court one was close but courts two and three were both 5-0 at one point in favor of either school. Pepperdine (3-1) on court two was the first to the finish line, as Bunyawi Thamchaiwat (Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand) and Lisa Zaar (Stockholm, Sweden) defeated Natasha Subhash and Anabelle Xu 6-2. #4 Savannah Broadus (Carrollton, Texas) and Janice Tjen (Jakarta, Indonesia) roared back from a 4-1 deficit on the top court to win five consecutive games and seal the doubles point for the Waves, winning 6-4 over Melodie Collard and Julia Adams.

Virginia (5-2) came back strong in singles, winning the necessary four first sets after losing the doubles point. However, #20 Tjen rolled #60 Julia Adams 6-2, 6-2 to double Pepperdine's lead. #16 Broadus was next, recording a 6-4, 6-3 win over Sara Ziodato to give Pepperdine a 3-0 lead.

UVA got one back on court five, but the Waves forced a trio of third sets on courts two, four and six to extend the match.

Anna Campana (Hillsborough, Calif.) dominated #80 Hibah Shaikh in the final two sets to post an impressive 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 win on court six to clinch the match for Pepperdine.
