Pepperdine Stumbles at #7 Texas

AUSTIN, Texas – The Pepperdine men's tennis program won the doubles point and took three first sets in singles from the #7 team in the country, but ultimately ran out of gas and fell to Texas 5-2 at the Texas Tennis Center on Friday evening.

Pepperdine (1-5) started doubles with a bang, as the #38 duo of Daniel De Jonge (Vlissingen, Netherlands) and Tim Zeitvogel (Baden-Baden, Germany) took down #4 Harper and Spizzirri on the top court, 6-3. Before court two could finish, Pietro Fellin (Milan, Italy) and Eric Hadigian (Sacramento, Calif.) secured the crucial doubles point for the Waves with a 6-4 win on court three to give Pepperdine momentum heading into singles.

Though Pepperdine took the necessary three first sets in singles, Texas (6-1) hung in and earned momentum, gaining a 2-1 advantage by virtue of straight set wins on courts one and four. The Longhorns then added to the lead with a three-set win on court three.

With courts two, five and six still going, Texas put the match away with a straight-set win on court five.

Courts two and six finished their matches, as #104 De Jonge earned his first singles win of the season, taking down #33 Pierre-Yves Bailly 7-6 (6), 7-5. Texas finished the match with a three-set win on court six.
