PLAY-BY-PLAY
The first set was tight from start to finish with a see-saw battle through a 12-12 tied score before the opposition gathered a two-point advantage.  Kills from Grace Chillingworth and Emily Hellmuth, along with an ace from Laine Briggs helped push the Waves ahead and more smashes from Chillingworth and Meg Brown gave the squad a 6-0 run to pull forward 18-14.  Pepperdine kept the small advantage through 21-18 before San Diego answered to tie things up at 22's, eventually take a one-point lead 23-22.  The Toreros would reach the first set point opportunity at 24-23, but a kill from Chillingworth tied things back up.  Another smash from Chillingworth put the Waves in a position to close and a setting error from across the net would give the squad a 26-24 set win for the first real advantage of the day.

The Waves were in the driver's seat the entirety of the second set, keeping the opposition to a -.088 hitting percentage throughout.  After a 6-6 tie to open, a slew of Toreros' errors, along with a pair of kills from Birdie Hendrickson and a block collaboration from Henrickson and Kenadie Patterson earned the team a four-point lead at the 12-8 mark.  Meg Brown, Hendrickson and K. Patterson continued with the onslaught of successful attacks and Emma Ammerman joined the cause with a pair of aces to put the squad ahead 23-14.  USD was able to secure a few points before the set ended, but Pepperdine had the edge and won the set 25-16 to pull ahead 2-0 overall.

It was a different story in the third set as the home team worked ahead to a 12-6 advantage, but the Waves would not be quick to roll over.  After trailing 17-11, a smash from Chillingworth and a pair of kills from Hendrickson started to help Pepperdine close the gap.  Another pair of smashes from the same Waves, as well as back-to-back kills from K. Patterson, erased the deficit and tied the score at 20-apiece.  Chillingworth then laid two more successful attacks down to put the squad up by two before USD answered with one of their own, 22-21.  That would be the last time the Toreros' would be allowed to score, however, as a kill from Chillingworth and a pair of attack errors from across the net ended the set 25-21 and earned Pepperdine the sweep.

Next week, Pepperdine will have only one match on the docket, hosting Saint Mary's on October 26 in Malibu.
