PLAY-BY-PLAY
Though Santa Clara had the first point of the match, that would be the only lead the Broncos would hold for the remainder, as a kill from
Emma Ammerman and an ace from
Riley Patterson quickly tied the tables for Pepperdine. A 2-2 would be the last tied score as well as a pair of
Meg Brown smashes, followed by a
Grace Chillingworth kill would put the Waves up by three. SCU came within one at the 7-6 mark, but more kills from
Birdie Hendrickson and
Vanessa Polk and a block collaboration from Chillingworth and Brown would push the squad to a 15-9 advantage. More big smashes from Ammerman and Brown would continue the squad's lead and a final Chillingworth kill would end the set 25-18 in favor of the Waves.
A strong serving presence from Hendrickson including a pair of aces and featuring big kills from Ammerman and Polk helped the Waves to an 8-0 run to start the second set. Kills from Brown and Chillingworth extended the gap to 10-points at the 12-2 mark and a block shortly after from Brown and Hendrickson made it 14-5. Successful attacks from Ammerman and Hendrickson kept things moving forward and the home team ahead by a dime through the majority of the rest of the set. Though the opposition gained some traction in the final few points, the damage was done and Pepperdine won the set 25-16 to head into the third set with a 2-0 advantage.
The Waves were strong offensively in the third set as well, starting on a 3-0 run with a pair of kills from Ammerman and Chillingworth and a block from Ammerman and Brown. More smashes from Brown, Hendrickson and Zelaya, as well as a third-ace from Hendrickson, kept the squad moving forward en route to a 14-9 lead. Late in the set, a strong
Riley Patterson service effort, featuring her third ace of the match as well as a block from Brown and Ammerman and four kills from Chillingworth put the Waves up 24-16 and in a position to close. An attack error from across the net would do the trick for a 25-16 set win to complete the sweep.
