MALIBU, California – The #10 Pepperdine women's tennis program earned a sweep of the weekly West Coast Conference awards on Tuesday, as
Lisa Zaar was named the first 2023 WCC Singles Player of the Week and the duo of
Savannah Broadus and
Janice Tjen was recognized as the WCC Doubles Team of the Week.
In her first collegiate action of the season, Zaar (Stockholm, Sweden) opened the spring in a big way, defeating three ranked opponents to claim a flight title at the Freeman Memorial Championship over the weekend. The 2022 ITA All-American in singles took down #72 Sofia Rojas (Oklahoma State) 6-4, 6-4 in straight sets on Friday before earning a comeback win over #44 Alexis Blokhina from Stanford in Saturday's semifinal, 6-7, 6-3, 6-3. Zaar rolled past #38 Alexandra Yepifanova 6-1, 6-4 in straight sets on Sunday to claim a title.
One of the best doubles pairs in the country, #4 Broadus (Carrolton, Texas) and Tjen (Jakarta, Indonesia) picked up right where they left off last season, blowing out Catanzarite and Tian from UCLA 6-1 along with Oklahoma State's Miyamoto and Peyre, 6-4, to claim a co-doubles championship at the Freeman Memorial Championship in Las Vegas over the weekend. The duo improves to 15-1 in overall doubles during the 2022-23 season.
This is the first career weekly award for Zaar and the third weekly doubles honor for Broadus and Tjen, who received a pair of awards last season (3/15/22 and 3/22/22).
Pepperdine faces #12 California on the road in the season opener on Sunday. First serve is at 1 p.m.
