LAS VEGAS, Nevada – The Pepperdine women's tennis team answered the bell in its final tune-up before the dual season, taking home a pair of singles flight titles at the prestigious Freeman Memorial Championship hosted by UNLV.
Three players –
Lisa Zaar,
Savannah Broadus, and
Carolyn Campana – won all three singles matches over the weekend.
Zaar (Stockholm, Sweden) defeated three nationally ranked opponents to claim the title in the top flight, while #21 Broadus (Carrollton, Texas) earned her second individual title of the year after previously winning the ITA Southwest Regional singles title in October.
In Sunday's final, Zaar took down #38 Alexandra Yepifanova 6-1, 6-4 from Stanford in straight sets. She had previously beaten #72 Sofia Rojas (Oklahoma State) and #44 Alexis Blokhina (Stanford).
Broadus was her usual dominant self, only dropping 10 total games in three matches on the weekend which included a ranked, 6-2, 6-1 win over #46 Ava Catanzarite from UCLA. She took down Alicia Dudeney from Florida with ease (6-0, 6-2) in Sunday's championship match.
Campana (Hillsborough, Calif.) also had a perfect weekend, defeating #72 Rojas in Sunday's finale. Her weekend included wins over UCLA's Vanessa Ong and Oklahoma State's Kristina Novak.
No title was awarded in flight four, as Campana was set to face off against sister and fellow Wave
Anna Campana (Hillsborough, Calif.) in Sunday's championship, but the matchups were rearranged so teammates would not play each other.
Nikki Redelijk (Windermere, Fla.) earned a pair of ranked wins on the weekend. She defeated #120 Anne-Christine Lutkmeyer (UCLA) on Friday by a score of 4-6, 7-6, 6-2 and then took down #108 Alana Wolfberg (Oklahoma State) on Sunday, 6-1, 6-1.
Only two rounds of doubles were played due to inclement weather on Saturday, so co-champion status was awarded to four Waves. The fourth-ranked duo of Broadus and
Janice Tjen (Jakarta, Indonesia) won both contests they played in Vegas, as did Zaar and
Bunyawi Thamchaiwat (Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand).
