Men's Golf Set for Another Elite Schedule in 2022-23
8/24/2022 11:10:00 AM | Men's Golf
MALIBU, California – After winning a national championship in 2021 and reaching the NCAA semifinals this past spring, the Pepperdine men's golf team may field a much-different looking team in 2022-23, but the elite schedule will remain the same as head coach Michael Beard announced the program's slate of tournaments for the upcoming campaign.
Â
"We feel very fortunate to play such a strong schedule again this year, including three regular-season events on the Golf Channel," Beard said. "Our guys are excited to get out there and compete against all of the best college teams. Being able to travel all over the country and experience different grasses and weather is important in the development of each player. The strength of our schedule gives our players the best opportunity to maximize their various rankings, including the World Amateur Golf Rankings and PGA Tour University."
Â
The Waves will head to the same set of tournaments as they did in 2021-22, highlighted by a third consecutive appearance in the exclusive East Lake Cup. Pepperdine's own Southwestern Invitational will be January 30-February 1 at North Ranch Country Club. Every one of Pepperdine's regular-season tournaments had a power rating of more than 800 points in the WAGR rankings last season.
Â
The Waves will return three players, two of whom were All-Americans (Derek Hitchner and William Mouw). Three graduate transfers and one incoming freshman will bolster the lineup.
Â
This past season, Pepperdine advanced to the NCAA semifinals and finished with national rankings of #4 by Golfweek/Sagarin, #5 in the Bushnell Golfweek coaches poll and #6 by Golfstat. Pepperdine won three tournaments, including its fourth consecutive West Coast Conference title and its 21st overall, and had its best-ever finish at an NCAA Regional, placing second in Bryan, Texas.
