CHAMPAIGN, Ill. –
Savannah Broadus and
Janice Tjen of the Pepperdine women's tennis program became the third and fourth Waves to become All-Americans this season, while
Lisa Zaar continued her impressive run in a successful day for Pepperdine at the NCAA individual championships at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex.
This is the third time that Pepperdine has had four All-Americans in the same season, as the only other occurrences were in 1997 and 2017.
Broadus (Carrollton, Texas) and Tjen (Jakarta, Indonesia), ranked 42
nd by the ITA, earned their second consecutive top-20 win, blowing out Virginia's Emma Navarro and Hibah Shaikh, ranked third, 6-1, 6-2. In the process, the pair became the 25
th and 26
th doubles All-Americans in program history.
Broadus and Tjen will face Georgia Tech's Kylie Bilchev and Ava Hraster, ranked 36
th by the ITA, in the quarterfinals on Thursday at a time to be determined.
On the singles side, #27 Zaar (Stockholm, Sweden) took down #63 Haley Giavara from California in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2, in the round of 16 to punch her ticket to Thursday's action.
In her first three matches in Champaign, Zaar has taken down the number one singles player from UCLA, South Carolina and now California. All three victories have been ranked wins, with two wins coming against top-25 opponents.
She will face #55 Fiona Crawley from North Carolina in Thursday's quarterfinal, which begins at 10:30 a.m. PT.
