HENDERSON, Nevada – The Pepperdine women's golf team won the West Coast Conference Championships for a league-best 19th time on Saturday, while freshman
Lauren Gomez earned her first college title with a three-shot victory.
The Waves shot a three-day total of 885 (299-295-291) at the par-72 Reflection Bay Golf Club and finished ahead of second-place BYU by 18 strokes. The Waves began the day with a 19-stroke lead and never let the Cougars back into it.
Pepperdine has now won 19 of the 25 league championships ever contested. It's the 18th time a Pepperdine player has been medalist at the WCC Championships.
In addition to Gomez, both
Lion Higo and
Kaleiya Romero tied for third, giving the Waves three of the top four finishers.
PLAYER SCORES
- Freshman Lauren Gomez (Murrieta, Calif.) was the only player to finish below par as she led wire-to-wire and ended with a 3-under 213 (70-72-71). She got off to a great start, with three birdies on the front nine and one more on 12 to go to 4-under, before eventually finishing at 1-under on the day. Gomez had 10 birdies for the tournament, tied for the most in the field. She had her team-best fourth top-10 result of the season.
- Sophomore Kaleiya Romero (San Jose, Calif.) tied for third at 220 (76-71-73). She had three birdies on the day. It's her second straight top-three performance at the WCC Championships.
- Sophomore Lion Higo (Gold Coast, Australia) also tied for third at 220 (76-72-72). Her second straight even-par round began with 12 consecutive pars, and she ended up with two birdies on the day.
- Junior Reese Guzman (Kahului, Hawai'i) tied for 13th at 233 (77-80-76). She had two birdies on Saturday.
- Graduate Megan Dennis (Bedfordshire, United Kingdom) came in as a third-round substitute and shot a 75, which included four birdies.
