NORMAN, Okla. – For the second straight day, the #5 Pepperdine women's tennis program found itself in a match that came down to the wire, but for the second consecutive outing the Waves found themselves on the wrong side of the ledger as #2 Oklahoma defeated the Waves 4-2 on Sunday afternoon at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
Oklahoma (25-1) got on the board first in doubles, registering a ranked win, 6-1, on court one to begin the afternoon. Soon after, the Sooners claimed the doubles point with a 6-2 win on court three. Court two, where Pepperdine (17-6) was leading 4-2, was abandoned.
The Waves initially flipped the script in singles, taking five first sets from Oklahoma. #103 Janice Tjen (Jakarta, Indonesia) took down #76 Ivana Corley on court four, 7-5, 6-2 to even up the match at one apiece. Moments later, #84 Savannah Broadus (Carrollton, Texas) gave the Waves their first lead with a 7-5, 6-3 win on court five over Alexandra Pisareva. The Sooners earned their first singles win with a victory on court three to tie the match, making the contest a best-of-three with a trio of courts remaining.
Courts one, two and six were tight throughout. OU saved three match points on court six in the second set to win 7-6 (11), pushing that court to a third set and joining courts one and two in the third. The Sooners then reclaimed the lead with a hard-fought, three-set victory on court two between ranked opponents. With court six at 4-3 in the third set in favor of OU, Oklahoma won the top-15 matchup on court one in a third-set, seven-point tiebreak to take the overall victory.
