SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The #23 Pepperdine men's tennis program dropped its first West Coast Conference match of the season on Saturday afternoon as #22 San Diego defeated the Waves 4-1 at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center
San Diego (18-3, 7-0) takes a one-game lead in the conference standings with two matches remaining for each team in the regular season.
Doubles were close throughout, as San Diego opened the afternoon with a 6-4 win on court three. Pepperdine (14-6, 6-1 WCC) responded with a 6-4 victory on court two thanks to the pair of
Andrew Rogers (Brentwood, Tenn.) and
Corrado Summaria (Cosenza, Italy). The doubles point came down to court one, where
Daniel De Jonge (Vlissingen, Netherlands) and
Eero Vasa (Turku, Finland) roared back from a 6-5 deficit to win 7-6 (5) over the #9 doubles pair in the country -- August Holmgren and Gui Osorio -- to give the Waves a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
The Waves were unable to keep the momentum going in singles, as the Toreros won four first sets. USD took the lead in a matter of moments after two straight-set wins on four and three, respectively. The Toreros kept the pressure on, taking the top-15 matchup on court one in straight sets. The match was clinched when San Diego took court six in three sets.
