MALIBU, California – The #22 Pepperdine men's tennis program continued its dominance in the West Coast Conference on Sunday, blowing out #55 Gonzaga 4-0 at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center to remain atop the league standings.
In five WCC matches, Pepperdine (13-5, 5-0 WCC) has surrendered only two points.
Gonzaga (15-4, 4-2 WCC) had to, unfortunately, retire on court two of doubles with the duo of
Andrew Rogers (Brentwood, Tenn.) and
Corrado Summaria (Cosenza, Italy) for the Waves leading 2-1. Pepperdine was firmly in control on the remaining courts. Court one's pair of
Daniel De Jonge (Vlissingen, Netherlands) and
Eero Vasa (Turku, Finland) along with court three's
Enrique Luque Rico (Cordoba, Spain) and
Tim Zeitvogel (Baden-Baden, Germany) finished simultaneously with 6-1 decisions to give Pepperdine a 1-0 lead heading into singles.
Pepperdine jumped all over the Zags in singles, and #48 Zeitvogel was the first winner at 6-1, 6-0 on court two over Matthew Hollingworth. Moments after, Rico joined the party with a 6-1, 6-1 win on six over Pablo Gomez Galvan to open up a 3-0 Waves lead. With one more win needed for the clinch, #15 De Jonge earned his second straight-set win of the weekend, taking down Sasha Trkulja 7-6 (6), 6-1 on court one to close out the victory.
