EUGENE, Oregon – The #21 Pepperdine men's tennis program nearly completed the comeback on Sunday afternoon but fell 4-3 to Oregon at the Student Tennis Center.
This was the third time that a match came down to the final singles matchup for Pepperdine (3-4) this season.
Oregon (4-2) struck first in doubles after the #15 doubles pair in the country, Joshua Charlton and Quinn Vandecasteele, was a winner on court one. Both courts two and three were up for the taking at 5-5 each, but Oregon claimed the last two games on court two for a 7-5 win, which gave the Ducks a 1-0 lead in the match.
In singles, #91
Tim Zeitvogel (Baden-Baden, Germany) was a straight-set winner on court two over Quinn Vandecasteele, 6-3, 6-3 to tie the match up at one, and the Waves had their first lead after #22
Pietro Fellin (Milan, Italy) was a 6-2, 6-3 winner on court three. Oregon then earned a point back after winning in straight sets on court four.
After the Ducks took court five in straight sets, Pepperdine found itself in a 3-2 hole with courts one and six remaining. Both #9
Daniel De Jonge (Vlissingen, Netherlands) and
Corrado Summaria (Cosenza, Italy) won first sets, putting themselves in position to take the match. Summaria took set two to win 6-2, 7-6, setting up a deciding third set on court one to determine the match after De Jonge dropped his second set. De Jonge and Charlton split the first four games, but Charlton pulled away to win four of the last five games and win the match for Oregon.
