SAN DIEGO, California – One of the best doubles teams in the country once again proved itself on the national stage this week as Pepperdine's
Savannah Broadus and
Janice Tjen won the coveted doubles title at the ITA National Fall Championships on Sunday. This is the first national fall doubles championship in school history.
This event is one of the two fall college tennis majors, with the ITA All-American Championships being the other.
Broadus (Carrollton, Texas) and Tjen (Jakarta, Indonesia), ranked #6 in the country, defeated North Carolina's Fiona Crawley and Carson Tanguilig 6-2, 7-6 (2) to win the event championship. The two rolled through the field in San Diego to win their biggest college tournament together. In five matches, the pair was only pushed to a third set once. In the first three rounds, the Waves only lost 13 games total.
This is the second tournament win of the fall for the duo, who won the Battle of the Bay doubles title in September. Last season, Broadus and Tjen advanced all the way to the semifinals of the NCAA Doubles Championship, becoming All-Americans in the process.
The two went 13-1 together this fall. In addition to the two tournament titles, the pair also were finalists at the ITA Southwest Regional two weeks ago.
At the Jack Kramer Invite in Rolling Hills Estates,
Carolyn Campana (Hillsborough, Calif.) and
Bunyawi Thamchaiwat (Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand) advanced to the doubles final before falling to UCLA's Vanessa Ong and Sasha Vagramov, 8-7 (1).
The Waves are off for the remainder of the semester before returning to action January 13-15, 2023, in Las Vegas for the Freeman Memorial Championship hosted by UNLV. The dual season begins Saturday, January 21, 2023 at California.
