MALIBU, California – After three highly successful seasons as the Pepperdine women's tennis assistant coach,
Pete Billingham has been promoted to the program's associate head coach as announced by head coach
Per Nilsson on Wednesday.
Since he arrived in Malibu ahead of the 2019-20 season, the Waves have gone 56-15 (.789) overall. They were the NCAA runner-up in 2021 and finished with a #3 national ranking. Pepperdine made the NCAA quarterfinals in 2022 and was ranked #8.
In just three seasons, Billingham has coached six ITA All-Americans (four singles players and one doubles pair). Among those standouts,
Janice Tjen and
Savannah Broadus advanced to the semifinals of the 2022 NCAA Doubles Championship, while
Lisa Zaar made it to the quarterfinals of the 2022 NCAA Singles Championship.
Billingham said: "I am excited for this opportunity and honored to have the trust of Per and Pepperdine. I'm looking forward to continuing to build towards a national championship."
Nilsson said: "I'm excited for Pete moving forward. He's one of the best coaches in the country and incredibly fun to work with. The players really appreciate Pete's full commitment and work ethic. He's a great communicator and has a great feel for how to coach a player. Every player needs different things and Pete has a great vision for that."
Pepperdine is off for the remainder of the fall and will be back in action January 13-15, 2023, at the Freeman Memorial Championship for the last individual tournament before the dual season begins on January 22 at California.
