Waves Narrowly Defeated at Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, California – The Pepperdine women's swim and dive program finished a grueling three-week stretch with a tight dual as Cal Poly took down the Waves 153.5-145.5 on Saturday afternoon at the Anderson Aquatic Center.

MEET RECAP

Charli Sunahara (Chino, Calif./Ruben S. Ayala HS), the defending Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference swimmer of the week, won two events to lead the Waves on Saturday. Her first victory came in the 100 breast with a time of 1:07.88. Then, she won the 200 breast in 2:26.38. This was the second win for the freshman in the 100 breast this season and third title in the 200 breast.

Jessica Calderoni (Los Altos, Calif./Sacred Heart Preparatory) earned a victory in the 200 fly for the third time this season, winning it Saturday in 2:11.93. In the 200 back, Kylie Taylor (Eugene, Ore./Churchill HS) continued her strong backstroke prowess with a first-place showing of 2:08.04. The Waves' 400 free relay team of Lindsay Hemming (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte HS), Lexi Haymart (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Ponderosa HS), Alexandra Browne (Arlington, Va./Washington-Liberty HS) and Anna Ryan (Alamo, Calif./Monte Vista HS) won with a 3:34.26 time.

Pepperdine found success in diving, too. Ava Langheim (St. Louis, Mo./Whitfield School) won the 3-meter competition with a score of 248.55, while Vivian Vallely (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor HS) narrowly missed the school record of 267.53 in the 1-meter event with a score of 264.80.

Along with the six first-place finishes, Pepperdine had eight second-place results.

QUOTABLE

Head coach Ellie Monobe said: "I was very pleased with the Waves today. Coming off of a tough dual with San Jose State less than 24 hours ago, our women handled the pressure tremendously. To be able to put together two meets back-to-back after three weeks of racing shows our team's grit and gives us confidence going into our mid-season meet in November."

NEXT UP

Pepperdine has a bye week before returning to Malibu for its final home events of the fall. The Waves host Loyola Marymount on Friday, November 4 at 11 a.m. The next day, the Waves will host UC Santa Barbara and UC San Diego in a double dual, also at 11 a.m.
