SAN DIEGO, California –
Savannah Broadus of the Pepperdine women's tennis program claimed the singles crown at the ITA Southwest Regional on Monday, marking the second win for the Waves in as many events this fall.
#49 Broadus (Carrollton, Texas) had little trouble rolling to the title, dropping just one set in six matches. In her two matches against ranked opponents, the sophomore dropped just 14 games total. She defeated #98 Kimmi Hance (UCLA) 6-0, 6-3 in Monday's championship.
This is the second consecutive season the Waves have won this event. Last fall,
Lisa Zaar took home the singles championship. In Pepperdine's first event of this season,
Janice Tjen (Jakarta, Indonesia) won the singles title at the Battle of the Bay in San Francisco.
Broadus and Tjen, the #6 doubles team in the country, advanced to the finals of the ITA Southwest Regional doubles championship before falling to Hance and Elise Wagle from UCLA in three sets.
Thanks to finals appearances in both singles and doubles, both Broadus and Tjen have earned the opportunity to compete at the ITA National Fall Championships in San Diego from November 2-6.
