#22 Waves Grit Out Five-Set Win over Cal Poly

MALIBU, Calif. — It was a brawl in Firestone Fieldhouse on Sunday night as the #22 Pepperdine women's volleyball team gritted out a five-set win over Cal Poly to close out the 23rd-annual Asics Classic.

After falling 25-15 to open the match, the Waves dominated with 25-8 and 25-13 second and third sets to rally.  Though the opposition forced a fifth with a 25-17 win in the fourth, the Waves fought hard to keep the fifth close.

After going down 12-9 in the set, a pair of kills from Rachel Ahrens brought Pepperdine within one-point and forced a Mustangs timeout.  A pair of attack errors out of the timeout helped flip the script and another kill from Ahrens put the Waves ahead 14-12.  Though the opposition was able to tie things up at 14's, another smash from Ahrens gave the home squad a second chance to close and Grace Chillingworth would be the Wave to do the dirty work with a kill to win it 16-14.

Ahrens posted her third 20+ kill match in as many matches with 21 smashes against the Mustangs.  She also led the team with three aces and added eight digs and three blocks.  Meg Brown and Chillingworth each tabbed new career-highs with 17 kills apiece.  Isabel Zelaya impressed with her first double-double of the season with 53 assists and 14 digs and Madison Shields held down the back line with 21 digs.

PLAY-BY-PLAY
Cal Poly came out strong to open the match, pulling ahead 10-3 to kick things off after putting down multiple kills and capitalizing on Waves' errors.  Though the home team was able to string a few points together, the Mustangs struck first with the 25-15 set win.

The second and third sets were a different story, however, as Pepperdine absolutely dominated the opposition.  Hitting a .469 in the second set alone, out-hitting the Mustangs 16-7, the Waves were able to pull ahead 11-6.  Back-to-back kills from Grace Chillingworth kept the Waves in action and blocks from Chillingworth and Brown together and then Chillingworth solo put the Waves ahead 17-6.  A strong service showing from Kayla Joyce kept the Waves on the offensive and blocks from Brown and Rachel Ahrens, followed by a kill from the same two and a final tip from Isabel Zelaya closed the set 25-8.

The third was similar with the Waves taking a 10-6 early lead after multiple smashes from Ahrens, Rosie Ballo and Chillingworth.  More kills from Ahrens, followed by a pair of blocks from Ballo with either Ahrens or Emma Ammerman put Pepperdine in a position to close things up.  Two kills from Brown and a few attack errors from across the net did the job and the Waves pulled ahead 2-1 with a 25-13 set win.

The fourth set was close to begin, but the opposition was able to pull ahead 17-10 and use the lead to take a 25-17 set win to force the fifth, which eventually ended with the Waves' win.
