Ahrens Surpasses 1,000 Career Kill Mark as Waves Fall to Huskies

MALIBU, Calif. — With an electric crowd making noise in Firestone Fieldhouse for the first time since March 2020 on Friday night, senior Rachel Ahrens became the 21st Pepperdine women's volleyball player to reach 1,000 kills as the #22 Waves fell to #9 Washington in four sets.  Although the Waves answered a 25-16 first set loss with a 25-22 second set win, the Huskies powered through the remaining sets 25-12, 25-19 to come away with the victory to open the 23rd annual Pepperdine Asics Classic.

Ahrens amassed a tied-career high 27 kills on a sound .380 hitting percentage throughout the match, finishing things up with 1,002 career kills.  She now ranks 20th in the Pepperdine women's volleyball record books for most career kills.

Pepperdine (6-1) will move on to face Cal Poly (2-5) on Sunday at 5 p.m. in Firestone.

PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Waves opened the match with a quick 2-0 run, but the Huskies evened that score and pulled ahead 9-4 with multiple kills.  Though Pepperdine strung a few points together throughout the set, Washington closed the door 25-16 to win the first set of the day.

In the second set, the Waves came out firing, pulling ahead 7-4 with kills from Rachel Ahrens, Rosie Ballo and Grace Chillingworth.  Ahrens then put down and ace, but the opposition was able to find the floor for a pair of aces of their own to tie things up and pull ahead 16-14.  A kill from Ahrens, followed by an error from across the net and another smash from Chillingworth put the Waves back in the lead.  It was a lead the home team would capitalize on, staying ahead throughout the remainder of the set.  Late in the action, a kill from Chillingworth and a Malibu Roofing Company rejection from Chillingworth and Meg Brown shut things down 25-22 in the Waves favor.

With the overall tied, the Huskies came out strong in the third, amassing a quick 13-5 lead over the Waves which they eventually turned into a 25-12 victory.  The fourth and final set featured strong moments from the Waves throughout, but after the Huskies had worked for an early lead they continued on to win the set 25-19 and the match 3-1.
