Shields Garners Fourth WCC Weekly Defensive Nod of the Season

MALIBU, Calif. — Senior libero Madison Shields received recognition as the West Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the fourth time this season on Wednesday afternoon, as announced the league office.Â
It's the seventh honor of its kind for Shields' career and the eight weekly nod the Pepperdine women's volleyball team has earned this season.
Shields once again held down the back row for Pepperdine as the Waves finished out the regular season push with three sweeps over San Francisco, Santa Clara and Gonzaga. In nine sets of action, she amassed 45 digs, 11 assists and three aces, averaging 5.00 digs, 1.22 assists and 0.33 aces per set for the Waves. She also posted 35 service receptions without a single error to keep a perfect 1.000 reception percentage.
In the first sweep over the Dons, Shields posted 13 digs, three aces and four assists, averaging 4.33 digs, 1.33 assists and 1.00 aces per set. Then, in the sweep of the Dons, she posted 17 digs and three assists, averaging a solid 5.67 digs and 1.00 assists per set throughout the match. She added 14 serve receptions without a single error in the back row during the match. In the final match of the regular season, a sweep over Gonzaga, she put in 15 digs and four assists to average 5.00 digs and 1.33 assists per set for the Waves. She also put in 15 serve receptions without an error to top off her defensive effort.
Pepperdine awaits the NCAA Selection Show on Sunday, November 28 to see what postseason fate the program faces. The show will air live on ESPNU at 5:30 p.m. PT.
