MALIBU, California – Who are the best Waves ever to wear a particular number on their jersey or cap? This series will aim to identify the most accomplished Pepperdine student-athletes, number by number.
Today, the greats who wore
number 22 are listed.
First, some caveats:
- Student-athletes before a certain year may not be included, as complete numerical rosters only go back so far. For the eight sports that wear numbers, only women's soccer and women's beach volleyball have every roster available.
- The complete numerical rosters for baseball (1971), men's basketball (1968-69), women's basketball (1979-80), men's volleyball (1975), women's indoor volleyball (1976) and men's water polo (1982) date back to the year shown here.
- In some cases, additional standout student-athletes from prior to those years were identified.
- Any student-athlete who received at least all-conference honors during this time, and others of note, were included based on current available information.
- Pepperdine sponsored football between the years of 1946 and 1961. Fifteen football players have been inducted into the Pepperdine Athletics Hall of Fame and those former student-athletes have been included in this series.
BASEBALL
- John Scolinos was the head coach for 15 seasons (1946-60) and he won 263 games. He was inducted into the Pepperdine Athletics Hall of Fame in 1980.
- Brad Bierley (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) was an All-American first team pick and the WCC Player of the Year in 1985. He set Pepperdine's single-season records for home runs (27) and RBI (75) that season while batting .354. The outfielder hit .311 with 35 home runs and 173 RBI over his four seasons.
- Steve Schenewerk (Fountain Valley, Calif./Fountain Valley HS) was all-conference second team in 1997. The right-handed pitcher won 27 games over his four seasons.
- Jared Pitney (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral HS) was an All-American third teamer in 2001. The infielder hit .397 with 14 home runs and 67 RBI that season. He hit .332 for his four-year career with 30 home runs and 182 RBI.
- Ty Harper (Newport Beach, Calif./Golden West College) was all-conference honorable mention in both 2002 and 2003. The infielder batted .332 over his two seasons with 61 RBI.
- Floyd Given (Rohnert Park, Calif./Rancho Cotate HS/Sacramento City College) switched from #55 in 2012 and was all-conference honorable mention for the second time. The outfielder batted .282 with 21 RBI that season.
- Joe Caparis (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) was all-conference honorable mention in 2019. The catcher hit .341 that season.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
- Ricardo Brown (St. Louis, Mo./Yavapai JC) earned All-WCC first team honors in 1979 and 1980. He averaged 18.7 points over 60 career games, second all-time at Pepperdine, and scored 1,124 career points in his two seasons. The guard had a long professional career in the Philippines and with the Philippines National Team. He was inducted into the Pepperdine Athletics Hall of Fame in 1996.
- Craig Davis (Oxnard, Calif./Hueneme HS) wore #22 for the first four (1986-89) of his five seasons before switching to #5. The guard holds the program career record for three-pointers made (274) and scored 1,619 points.
- Tezale Archie (Fresno, Calif./Hoover HS) wore #22 for the first four (1996-99) of his five seasons before switching to #12. The guard finished with career totals of 718 points and 379 assists.
- Glen McGowan (Los Angeles, Calif./Notre Dame Prep) had most of his success when he was wearing #2, but he was All-WCC honorable mention in 2002 wearing #22. The forward averaged 9.8 points that season.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
- Donna Tatum (Los Angeles, Calif.) holds the school record for assist average in a season (8.4 in 1980-81). The guard had 625 points and 419 assists in her two seasons.
- Shawn Sturgeon (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) wore #22 her final three seasons (1984-86) and the center had career totals of 1,183 points and 709 rebounds.
- Shannon Frowiss (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara HS) made the All-WCC first team in 1992. The forward scored 1,369 career points in her three seasons.
- Samantha Rigley (Granada Hills, Calif./Alemany HS) was All-WCC honorable mention in 1999. The guard scored 1,021 career points in her four years.
- Damaris Hinojosa (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS) earned her first two All-WCC first team awards in 2000 and 2001 before switching to #25. The guard averaged a career-best 14.5 points per game in 2000-01 and scored 1,543 career points.
- Daphanie Kennedy (Oakland, Calif./Kearny HS) was a four-time All-WCC pick, making the first team in 2006 and 2008, and was the 2006 WCC Tournament MVP. The guard averaged 19.6 points as a senior and scored 1,464 points in four years.
- Shay Cooney-Williams (Frisco, Texas/Frisco HS) was All-WCC honorable mention in 2013. The guard scored 773 points in her four seasons.
- Allie Green (Sacramento, Calif./Sacramento HS) was All-WCC honorable mention in 2017. The guard averaged 14.4 points as a senior and scored 1,325 career points.
FOOTBALL
- Ed Hyduke (Inglewood, Calif.) earned Little All-American, United Press Little All-Coast second team and All-CCAA honors in 1950. The quarterback set the school record for total yardage in a career (2,447 yards). He was inducted into the Pepperdine Athletics Hall of Fame in 1982.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
- Jennifer Brewer (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada HS) was All-WCC honorable mention in 2003 and 2006. The forward scored 13 career goals. She would return later as an assistant coach.
- Katie Gallanes (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) appeared in 63 games as a talented midfielder from 2010-13.
- Hailey Harbison (Rancho Penasquitos, Calif./Westview HS) made All-WCC honorable mention in 2014 and then switched to #2, where she earned three more all-conference awards.
MEN'S VOLLEYBALL
- Alex Harthaller (Innsbruck, Austria/IPFW) was All-American honorable mention and a CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2018. The outside hitter averaged 3.07 kills per set that season.
WOMEN'S BEACH VOLLEYBALL
- Heidi Dyer (San Clemente, Calif./Saddleback Valley Christian HS) was an All-American in 2016, 2018 and 2019, and was All-WCC three times (twice on the first team). She won 80 matches in her four-year career.
MEN'S WATER POLO
- Todd King (Kailua, Hawai'i/Iolani HS) is the highest-scoring Wave wearing #22, notching two goals in the 1994 season.
