The Greatest Waves at Every Number: #31

MALIBU, California – Who are the best Waves ever to wear a particular number on their jersey or cap? This series will aim to identify the most accomplished Pepperdine student-athletes, number by number.

Today, the greats who wore number 31 are listed.

First, some caveats:
  • Student-athletes before a certain year may not be included, as complete numerical rosters only go back so far. For the eight sports that wear numbers, only women's soccer and women's beach volleyball have every roster available.
  • The complete numerical rosters for baseball (1971), men's basketball (1968-69), women's basketball (1979-80), men's volleyball (1975), women's indoor volleyball (1976) and men's water polo (1982) date back to the year shown here.
  • In some cases, additional standout student-athletes from prior to those years were identified.
  • Any student-athlete who received at least all-conference honors during this time, and others of note, were included based on current available information.
  • Pepperdine sponsored football between the years of 1946 and 1961. Fifteen football players have been inducted into the Pepperdine Athletics Hall of Fame and those former student-athletes have been included in this series.
BASEBALL
  • Steve Montgomery (Corona del Mar, Calif./Fountain Valley HS) was an All-American first team pick in 1991 and second team in 1992. The right-handed pitcher went 22-6 with 13 saves and a 2.57 ERA in his three seasons. He went on to play four seasons in MLB.
  • Bryce Uhrig (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara City College) was all-conference honorable mention in 2009. The right-handed pitcher had a 2.62 ERA in 34.1 innings as a reliever in his only season with the Waves.
  • Ranny Lowe (Granada Hills, Calif./Notre Dame HS) was all-conference honorable mention in 2013. The outfielder batted .303 with 26 RBI that season.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
  • Marques Johnson (Flint, Mich./Indian Hills CC) is the highest-scoring player to wear #31, as he had a total of 686 points in the 1995-96 and 1996-97 seasons and averaged 12.7 points in 54 games.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
  • Nicole Funn (Carson, Calif./Oregon State) made the All-WCC first team in 2004 and was honorable mention in 2003. The forward scored 592 points in her two seasons with the Waves.
  • Jessica Ross (Gilroy, Calif./Notre Dame HS) started more games than any other Wave (112) from 2006-09 and is among the program's top three-point shooters, as the guard made 137 career three-pointers.
FOOTBALL
  • Chuck Gibbon (Beverly Hills, Calif.) played four different sports for the Waves, and was a defensive back and punter for the football team. He was inducted into the Pepperdine Athletics Hall of Fame in 1981.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
  • Kayla Stolte (Santee, Calif./West Hills HS) the only Wave to wear #31, earned All-WCC honorable mention in 2008. The goalkeeper had 23 career wins and a 0.94 goals-against average.
