MALIBU, Calif. — Hannah Frohling, of the Pepperdine women's volleyball team, was announced as recipient of the West Coast Conference Postgraduate Scholarship by the league office on Friday morning.
Â
Frohling graduated from Pepperdine in May 2020 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Medicine. She maintained an impressive 3.95 grade point average after four years of excellence in the classroom. The on and off the court standout plans to continue her education by pursuing a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree at the University of Southern California.Â
Â
"I have always wanted to work in the health profession because I have a true passion for helping people, but also, a passion for knowledge, especially about the wonders of the human body and movement," said Frohling.
Â
"Throughout my career as an athlete, I have been injured and have first-hand experienced physical therapy and the recovery process and know the feeling of having to watch your team play without you or worry about the results of an X-ray. I fell in love with this profession and have been pursuing it ever since."
From 2018-20, Frohling served on the Waves Leadership Council and was Vice President in the 2019-20 academic year, helping the Waves continue the group's goal of working to unite sports, organizing community service opportunities, helping connect the student-athlete voice with administration and voting on the NCAA agenda. She was also involved in on-campus activities and communities outside of athletics, serving on the Student Philanthropy Council from 2018-20 where she worked in the fundraising office for the University and focused on student giving.Â
Â
In 2019, she was a research assistant, helping with exercise physiology research regarding exercising in low-oxygen environments, attended the WCC Leadership Summit, served on the WCC Executive Council STAR where she represented Pepperdine in meetings and was involved in voting and discussions on proposed legislation. She also volunteered in a PT clinic seeing general population patients. In her four years, she also worked as a lifeguard at the Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool, a tutor, student athletic medicine intern and teaching assistant for a sports medicine class.
Â
A four-time Pepperdine Scholar-Athlete, Frohling had tremendous success in the classroom. She earned CoSIDA Academic All-District first team acclaim in 2017 and second team honors in 2018 and 2019. She was a three-time WCC All-Academic first teamer and WCC Commissioner's Honor Roll 'gold' honoree. She was also a Pepperdine Regent Scholar all four years. Earlier in the summer, she also received the Ethnic Minority and Women's Enhancement Graduate Scholarship.Â
Â
Her success in the classroom didn't stop her on the court either, as the four-year starter currently ranks sixth all-time at Pepperdine in kills (1,327), seventh in points (1,545.0) and eighth in aces (114). She appeared in 115 matches and made 98 starts throughout her career, averaging 3.10 kills, 1.49 digs, 0.27 aces, 0.45 blocks and 3.61 points per set. In the single-season record books, she ranks fourth in aces (40 in 2018), eight in points (498 in 2017) and ninth in kills (435 in 2017).
Â
She is a three-time All-WCC honoree with first team honors in 2018 and 2019 and honorable mention nod in 2017. She was also the 2020 Wave of the Year, an award given by the Waves Leadership Council to recognize a student-athlete for their outstanding spirit and support of Pepperdine's athletic programs.
Â
In her final year at Pepperdine, Frohling also joined the Pepperdine beach volleyball team.
Â
To be eligible for a WCC Postgraduate Scholarship, a student-athlete must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25, demonstrate significant athletic contributions to his or her sport for a minimum of two years, and have a record of participation in campus or community activities. He or she also must submit a personal statement of intention to attend graduate or professional school for which this scholarship would be awarded.
