MALIBU, Calif. – The 13th-ranked Pepperdine women's tennis team signed Ohio State transfer and 2020 ITA All-American Shiori Fukuda to further excel the Waves' roster.
Â
A native of Tokyo, Japan, Fukuda helped the fifth-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes to a 9-3 season, where she was also named the Big Ten Athlete of the Week twice. She finished the abrupt 2020 dual season ranked 11th in the country in singles, going 24-7 on the year. Fukuda's career accolades include a 2020 ITA All-American selection, 2018 and 2019 First Team All-Big Ten team, 2018 ITA Midwest Region Rookie of the Year, two-time Big Ten Athlete of the Week and has been ranked for nearly her entire career.
Â
With the Buckeyes, Fukuda saw wins over highly-ranked opponents such as #2 Florida State, #10 Duke, #18 Arizona State and #34 Northwestern.
Â
"We're very excited to add Shiori to our team," Head coach Per Nilsson said.
Â
"She's not only an outstanding player and proven winner but she's the kind of person and personality we look for in a student-athlete. We have a close-knit, hard-working team of conscientious athletes and Shiori is a perfect fit."
Â
Fukuda joins Texas transfer Lexi Ryngler and prep standout Nikki Redelijk in the #13 Waves' 2020-21 signing class, as well as veterans #1 Ashley Lahey, #35 Jessica Failla and #33 Anastasia Iamachkine.
