Women's Golf Takes Share of Lead in Colorado

WOLCOTT, Colorado – Big opening rounds by Momoka Kobori and Alexa Melton helped the Pepperdine women's golf team into a share of the first-round lead at the Golfweek Conference Challenge on Monday.

The Waves shot a 7-under 281 at the par-72 Red Sky Golf Club Fazio Course and are tied with Ole Miss.

Pepperdine has won this tournament -- which features schools from 18 different conferences -- four times, last in 2014, and has finished second each of the last three years.

- Senior Momoka Kobori (Rangiora, New Zealand) is tied for second place with a 5-under 67. She was even-par making the turn, but then recorded three consecutive birdies, and had five of her six birdies on the day over her final nine holes.
- Freshman Alexa Melton (Covina, Calif./South Hills HS) is tied for fourth place with a 4-under 68. She eagled the par-5 second hole, and had five birdies over the course of the round.
- Sophomore Sifan He (Shanghai, China) had an even-par 72 that put her into a tie for 19th. She had four birdies during her round.
- Freshman Reese Guzman (Kahului, Hawai'i/Maui HS) is tied for 41st after a 74. She had one birdie today.
- Junior Megan Dennis (Bedfordshire, United Kingdom/Florida Tech) is tied for 76th after a 79. She posted two birdies.
- Playing as an individual, sophomore Kathrine Chan (Richmond, B.C., Canada) is tied for 31st after an opening 73 that included five birdies.
