Wong Adds Three-Time Olympian Berg to Women's Volleyball Sidelines

MALIBU, Calif. — Head Coach Scott Wong announced the hiring of three-time Olympian and two-time medalist Lindsey Berg to the Pepperdine women's volleyball sidelines as an assistant coach.

"Lindsey has played at the highest levels of our sport and she has done it successfully for a long time," said Wong.  "Lindsey has a lot to offer our young ladies as she will help mentor, coach and teach them to accomplish more than they could have imagined."

Before retiring from playing the game, Berg helped lead Team USA to a pair of silver medal finishes in the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games, while also playing in Italy on the professional circuit for seven seasons.

"I am so honored that Scott has the respect and trust in me to join the Pepperdine program for a season," said Berg.  "What excites me is I have an opportunity to contribute to a team of young women athletes and not only help them on the volleyball court but off as well. Hopefully from my experiences in my own career I will be able to guide and make a positive impact on them. Looking forward to getting started and reaching new heights."

Berg was on the U.S. Women's National Team for the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympic Games, helping the red, white and blue to the team's two silver medals.  She joined the Americans in 2003 and in her first season with Team USA, was named the best setter of the Pan American Cup in the team's journey to winning the tournament.  She repeated the honor in the following two years, as well as earning a best setter accolade at the NORCECA Continental Championship, helping the U.S. win gold.

The U.S. would go on to bronze at the FIVB World Cup and silver at the NORCECA Championship in 2007, before the team went on to compete at the 2008 Olympic Games.  After the team won silver, she was named the USA Volleyball Female Indoor Athlete of the Year for that year.  She continued to benefit the U.S. with a 2nd place finish at the 2011 FIVB World Cup, qualifying the team for the 2012 Games.  She led her team to a gold medal in 2011 at the NORCECA Volleyball Championship and was once again named the tournament's best setter, and again to a gold at the FIVB World Grand Prix in that same year.

She was once again named USA Volleyball Indoor Athlete of the Year for 2011, and played in seven of eight matches en route to another U.S. silver medal in 2012.

Prior to the Olympic circuit and professional stage, Berg was a standout for University of Minnesota, earning AVCA All-District and All-Big Ten first team honors in 1999, 2000 and 2001, as well as the Big Ten Medal of Honor in 2001.  She also led the team in assists all four years and digs in one season.

In the Minnesota women's volleyball career records, she currently ranks 2nd all-time with 283 total service aces and 3rd all-time with 5,913 total assists.  Berg is heavily seen throughout the single-season records as well, still ranking 1st for 14.21 assists/set in 2000, 4th with 13.19 assists/set in 1999, and 1,662 total assists and 0.65 aces/set in 2000 just to name a few.  She also ranks 2nd with 86 total assists against Penn State on Nov. 4, 2000, along with other single-match records.

Berg was born in Honolulu, Hawai'i and graduated from Punahou High School before becoming a Gopher.
