MORAGA, Calif. -- The Pepperdine men's tennis team picked up its first West Coast Conference win on Saturday, defeating Saint Mary's 4-1 at Korst Tennis Complex. Dane Esses clinched the victory for the Waves with a 7-6, 6-2 victory on court three.
After taking the doubles point, the Waves (4-14, 1-2) stayed solid throughout the match, not letting the Gaels (3-13, 0-4) get back into the match.

The Waves started off strong in doubles play, winning matches on courts one and two to clinch the point. Lautaro Pane and Dane Esses defeated Damon Kesaris and Nash Vollenweider on court one to start the match off. Yusuf Khamis and Dennis Uspensky then toppled Matthew Campana and Matis Bot on court three to clinch the point for the Waves. Max Mendelsohn and Brian Berdusco were locked at 4 games apiece on court two when Khamis and Uspensky won their match.
Pepperdine kept the momentum going into singles, winning all but two first sets. Pane was the first Wave to win a match, defeating Chambers Easterling in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. Berdusco followed closely after, winning 6-2, 6-4 on court four against Matis Bot. Dane Esses clinched the match on court four, winning his match against Matthew Campana 7-6, 6-2. Both Mendelsohn was leading his match in the third set, and Khamis was down in the second set of his match when the match was clinched.

The Waves host two matches at home next Sunday. At noon, Gonzaga comes to Malibu for a WCC matchup beginning at noon. At 6 p.m., the Waves matchup with UC Riverside in a non-conference match.
