11/1/2018 10:21:00 AM | Women's Tennis, Competing With Purpose Blog
Anastasia Iamachkine is a freshman on the Pepperdine women's tennis team who is from Lima, Peru. She plans to major in marketing here at Pepperdine. Her brother, Pedro Iamachkine, played four years of collegiate men's tennis at Pepperdine. Anastasia talked to us about how the start to her journey here at Pepperdine has been and what the transition from Peru felt like for her:
Â
Q: How has your first semester been here?
Â
A: It's amazing, I love it here at Pepperdine. The school is good, the people are really nice, and also my brother is here, he is a senior and he was on the tennis team, so I have family here, which is really nice. I am really enjoying it so far.
Â
Q: What was the transition from Peru to America like for you?
Â
A: I travel a lot because of tennis tournaments, so I am used to travelling around a lot. So, leaving home was not a big problem for me. Just the food, I think is very different.
Â
Q: Did your brother influence your decision in coming to Pepperdine?
Â
A: The women's tennis team is really good and I knew that the coaches work hard and they have a good team, so that was one of the reasons. Also, the location is great being in Malibu, California, and yes, my brother is here, so it was a combination of all these things.
Â
Q: What do you like most about your team?
Â
A: We are like a family, we are all really close and I have a great relationship with every single player. We are six players on the team right now, along with the two coaches, and I get along great with all of them so it feels like home.
Â
Q: What do you enjoy the most about being a student-athlete?
Â
A: Well, I am always busy and I like being busy, if I had a lot of time on my hands I don't know what I would be doing, so I like that being a student-athlete keeps me organized. I enjoy the practices a lot. It is the most fun part of the day that I look forward to the most.
Â
Q: What are you looking forward to for the rest of the season?
Â
A: I am looking forward to having good grades this year. I also want to improve my tennis, and make more friends.
Â
Q: What are some individual goals you have for this year?
Â
A: Coach has not mentioned our performance goals for the season yet, but his main goal is for us to help each other when things are tough and work on creating a deeper bond with each other. After college, I want to turn professional, that has been my dream since I was a little kid. I always believe studies are very important so it is great that I have the opportunity to have it all in one place here at Pepperdine.
