Kessler Edwards is a highly touted freshman on the Pepperdine men's basketball team. He tells us about how he is adjusting from high school to college and what he is looking forward to most this season:
Q: What have the first few months of school and basketball been like? Was the transition easy for you from high school to college?
A: The transition from high school to college wasn't that bad because we also had summer, so we came in before everyone else did and took some classes and started practice. So it wasn't too hard of a transition, we got to ease our way into it. The first couple of months have been pretty different, the training is hard and I've never done anything like it at home, but it has been good so far.
Q: Your older brother Kameron is a redshirt junior on the team. What role did that play for you when deciding to come to Pepperdine?
A: A really big role. I feel like the opportunity to play college basketball with him was a huge part. Not a lot of people get to do that and there aren't a lot of people who are playing with their brothers, and we are pretty close.
Q: What has it been like playing for this coaching staff?
A: It's been pretty amazing. They are all really good guys. They relate to us all very well. They know the game of basketball really well. It's good because they push us to do our best and Coach Romar and all his staff, they're very experienced. They just want us to compete and give our best effort every time and expect nothing less of us.
Q: Presumably you saw your older brother in previous years participate in Blue and Orange Madness. What was it like to take part in the event?
A: I've been to two or three before so I'd already seen it and I was just excited to do it with him. It's actually surprising because I didn't think I was going to do the dunk contest, but, it was definitely fun being out there. It's different than what it looks like.
Q: What were your thoughts on winning the dunk contest at Blue and Orange Madness?
A: I honestly didn't think I was going to win it at all. My teammates and coaches chose me to do it and I thought either
Andre Ball or my brother was going to win. I couldn't believe it, It was surprising.
Q: What are your expectations for yourself as a freshman this season?
A: I want to contribute as much as I can on the court to the team. I feel like even though I'm a freshman, I can make a big impact to the team offensively and defensively. We has a good group of guys and I feel like I could help us get some wins this year. Just to be an impact freshman on the court.
Q: You have a lot of new guys on the team, how close is this freshman class?
A: We're really close, there's seven of us freshmen and we all came in together. We're in this together, we do everything together and we all have a couple of classes with each other. It's nice to have this big brotherhood.
Q: What are you looking forward to most this coming season?
A: Being on the court, not only with my blood brother but all my brothers. We are brothers, the whole team, competing with each other. I think since we weren't very good last year, I don't know what people are expecting of us. But I'm looking forward to shocking everybody and being better than everyone thinks we are going to be.
