MALIBU, Calif. " The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced that 822 teams have earned the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2016-17 as released on Monday morning, including both the Pepperdine women's indoor and beach volleyball squads.
The number of teams earning the award this season stands at 822 teams, which breaks the previous year's total of 764 to set an all-time high.
The indoor squad posted a 3.335 cumulative grade point average throughout the 2016-17 school year, after 10-of-16 eligible players bested the required 3.30 GPA mark. The highest returning grade point average was earned by rising junior Jenna Tunnell who finished the year with a 3.92 average.
The beach squad tabbed a 3.304 collective grade point average, with 10-of-14 individual players earning grade point averages above the required team mark. The highest returning GPA for the Waves will be rising senior Corinne Quiggle, who posted a 3.922 average.
The AVCA honored 145 indoor NCAA Division I women's programs and 19 beach volleyball programs this season.
The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
