ATHENS, Ga.: The 8th-ranked Pepperdine women's tennis team's 19th-ranked freshman, Ashley Lahey, finished out her remarkable season in the NCAA Singles Championships Lahey's Season Ends in NCAA Singles quarterfinal on Saturday afternoon at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
The freshman battled through three previous opponents to reach of the Elite Eight against 18th-ranked Sydney Campbell of Vanderbilt. She won her first set 6-3, but dropped the following two sets 6-4, 6-2 to bow out of the tournament.
This was the second-consecutive season the Waves have sent a freshman into the quarterfinal. Last season, Luisa Stefani made a semifinal run in a memorable campaign at the singles championships.
Lahey posted two upsets in the first three rounds. She opened the tournament by defeating Florida's 31st-ranked Ingrid Neel. In the next two rounds, she downed 11th-ranked Jade Lewis of LSU with a 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 thriller and then tabbed a 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 upset over Baylor's 3rd-ranked Blair Shankle in the round of 16.
Lahey finishes her freshman campaign with an impressive 32-7 overall record, including a 16-3 dual record and a 16-4 tournament record for the Waves. She posted a 12-6 record when facing nationally ranked opponents.
As Stefani was seeded in the top-16 and both Sherif and Lahey have advanced to the round of 16, per ITA All-American criteria, all three Waves will be named ITA Singles All-Americans at the completion of the championships. Sherif and Maddox will also be tabbed ITA Doubles All-Americans as the duo were seeded in the top-eight heading into the tournament.
It is first time since 1989 and second time in Pepperdine women's tennis history that the Waves have had three singles and one doubles pair earn All-American honors. The last three to achieve the feat were singles All-Americans and alums Ginger Helgeson, Janna Kovacevich and Noelle Porter. Helgeson and Porter also earned doubles All-American honors that year.
