ARTHUR ASHE JR. SPORTS SCHOLARS
MALIBU, Calif.: Thirteen Pepperdine student-athletes earned Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar status for 2016-17, which was announced recently by the publication Diverse Issues in Higher Education.
The list is highlighted by Guilherme Hadlich of men's tennis and alumna Karissa Garcia of women's soccer. Hadlich earned acclaim as a national semifinalist, while Garcia was honored as an Arthur Ashe Sports Scholar: 25th Anniversary Silver Star.
Hadlich, who is a senior on the Pepperdine men's tennis team this season, is one of 15 male Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar semifinalists listed along with receiving first team honors. It is the second sports scholar honor received in his career as he was the men's tennis sport winner for the award in 2016. Hadlich has amassed a 3.645 grade-point average in four years while studying International Business. He earned ITA All-Academic Scholar-Athlete status in 2015-16 and is a two-time Pepperdine Scholar-Athlete and three-time WCC Commissioner's Honor Roll honoree with two silver accolades and one bronze. On the court, he is a three-time All-WCC performer with two first team nods and one second team honor.
Garcia, who played for the Pepperdine women's soccer team from 2008-11 and earned Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar honors all four years, was named to the 25th Anniversary Silver Stars list as one of 25 past standouts honored on the award's 25th anniversary. Garcia played in 53 games for the Waves and made 30 starts, while also excelling in the classroom as a two-time WCC All-Academic selection and a four-time WCC Commissioner's Honor Roll "gold" honoree. She is currently a business systems analyst at IMA Technologies.
Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars are minority student-athletes who exhibit athletics ability, academic excellence (a minimum 3.20 cumulative grade-point average) and community activism. More than 1,000 student-athletes were nominated from across the nation.
