MALIBU, Calif.: The 12th-ranked Pepperdine women's tennis team defeated LIU Brooklyn with a 4-0 sweep in the NCAA Women's Tennis National Championship first round at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center on Friday afternoon. The Waves won all three doubles matches and picked up singles wins on courts one, two and three to secure the postseason victory.
The Waves (22-4) have now won 17-straight matches, including 13 by sweeps. Pepperdine advances to the NCAA Second Round against No. 23 UCLA at noon PT on Saturday, May 13 at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu.
In doubles action, the No. 3-Waves pair Ashley Lahey and Dzina Milovanovic finished first with a 6-1 win over Isabella Wagener and Jennifer Gogova.
The next two matches finished simultaneously, resulting in both to be counted. No. 8-ranked Christine Maddox and Mayar Sherif downed Anna Grigoryan and Ana Leonte with a 6-3 mark on court one, before 53rd-ranked Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai and Luisa Stefani downed Malin Leysen and Sasha Bollweg 6-2.
With the 1-0 advantage heading into singles action, the Waves had the momentum and garnered first set wins on all six courts.
No. 37-ranked Sherif won the first singles match of the day for Pepperdine with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Jennifer Gogova on court three. No. 14-ranked Stefani then put down Anna Grigoryan with a 6-1, 6-3 final mark to put the Waves in a position to clinch.
No. 19-ranked Lahey would deliver the final blow with a 6-1, 6-4 result in the No. 2 position to clinch the 4-0 sweep for the Waves.
