RESULTSCLAREMONT, Calif.: After a hard-fought doubles point and six tough singles match-ups, the Pepperdine men's tennis team fell to San Diego in the West Coast Conference Championships at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Waves (13-10, 7-2 WCC) tabbed two singles and two doubles partnerships to the WCC All-Tournament squad. Senior Stefan Menichella garnered both singles and doubles honors alongside doubles sophomore partner Jack Van Slyke. Junior Pedro Iamachkine tabbed singles acclaim and senior Tom Hill and junior Lautaro Pane slated the other doubles accolade.
Pepperdine came back to win the doubles point, but USD had a strong singles presence put the score at a 3-3 tie and all onlookers watching court three.
Junior Lautaro Pane (Puerto Madryn, Argentina/SEADEA) and Toreros' senior Joshua Page went head-to-head for the clinch. After battling in a first-set, the opposition pulled ahead with a 7-6 (5) mark, before Pane dominated the second set 6-1 to send the match to a third. Despite a valiant effort, the momentum was on San Diego's side from the opening point and Page took a 6-3 win to clinch the Toreros' WCC Championship.
The Waves opened the action in doubles with No. 3-pair Pane and senior Tom Hill (Birmingham, England/K12 International) working ahead for the first Waves' win of the afternoon with a 6-2 victory over Guus Koevermans and Pratt Keerasuntonpong.
Pepperdine fell on court two, which put all eyes on the No. 1 doubles-partnership of senior Stefan Menichella (Santa Barbara, Calif./University HS) and sophomore Jack Van Slyke (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Laurel Springs HS (Calif.)).
The duo fell behind with a 3-5 disadvantage throughout the set, but battled back to tie the match 5-5. After each team posted a sixth-point, the match went into a win-by-two, first-to-seven tiebreak option. The Waves fell behind 3-6, but the doubles point on the line, stayed resilient and fought back to tie 6-6. A few points were exchanged, but after a 7-7 tie, Menichella and Van Slyke had enough and plastered the next two points on the board over Joshua Page and Filip Vittek to put the Waves up 1-0 heading into singles action.
The Toreros won the first match on court five with a two-set result to tie the match 1-1.
Pepperdine was quick to bounce back, however, as Menichella crushed Guilherme Osorio with a 6-2, 6-4 final mark on court two to put the Waves up again in the match.
Junior Pedro Iamachkine (Lima, Peru/Nebraska HS) also played big in the No. four position, winning the first set 6-2 before coming back in the second to take a 7-5 victory and put his team ahead 3-1 on the day.
The opposition had the edge on the other courts, though, taking wins on one, six and then three for the clinch to finish the day with a 4-3 USD win.
