
Tough Battle Ends with No. 9 Oklahoma 4-3 Win

RESULTS | PHOTO GALLERYMALIBU, Calif.: The Pepperdine men's tennis team had a big bout with 9th-ranked Oklahoma at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center this Tuesday afternoon, reaching a 3-3 tie before the Sooners clinched the final match on court three.
The Waves (4-6, 1-0 WCC) picked up the doubles point early, before going 4-2 in singles against Oklahoma (11-3).
Senior Stefan Menichella (Santa Barbara, Calif./University HS) and sophomore Jack Van Slyke (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Laurel Springs HS (Calif.)) began the afternoon with a 6-3 win over 59th-ranked Spencer Papa and Florin Bragusi on court one. The opposition took court two to even doubles and put all eyes on court three.
Junior duo Pedro Iamachkine (Lima, Peru/Nebraska HS) and Lautaro Pane (Puerto Madryn, Argentina/SEADEA) worked to a 4-4 tie late in the set, but buckled down and turned up the intensity to plaster a 6-4 doubles-clinching win over Jochen Bertsch and Mason Bridgan.
With the advantage up 1-0 heading into singles, the Waves and Sooners went 3-2 to start singles action and leave the deciding match on court three with Iamachkine and 77th-ranked Florian Bragusi.
Iamachkine took the first set 6-3 before falling 6-4 in the second. He went point-for-point en route to a 5-5 tie in the third set, before the opposition won 7-5 to clinch the overall match.
To start singles action, OU won on court one and two, but Menichella evened the match with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Adrian Oetzbach on court four. Oklahoma then picked up a two-set win on court five, but freshman Dane Esses (Houston, Texas/Memorial HS) answered with a solid 7-6 (5), 6-2 victory over Arnaud Restifo on court six to once again tie the match at 3's.
