RESULTSLOS ANGELES, Calif.: The 12th-ranked Pepperdine women's tennis team posted a dominating upset over 9th-ranked UCLA at the Los Angeles Tennis Courts this Sunday afternoon. The Waves won the doubles point before posting four singles win to amass the 5-2 overall victory.
The Waves' 6th-ranked sophomore Luisa Stefani defeated 2nd-ranked Ena Shibahara with a 6-2, 7-6 (3) final mark. It was Pepperdine's fifth win of the day.
With the momentum in Pepperdine's court after clinching the doubles point, the Waves entered singles with the intent of closing the match down. Although the Bruins evened the match with a victory on court four, the Waves bounced back to pick up wins on courts two, six and five to clinch the win. Courts one and three finished out as well and the Waves split with a win on court one and a loss on three.
With a 1-1 tie in singles action, 25th-ranked freshman Ashley Lahey went head-to-head with Terri Fleming on court two, amassing a 6-3, 6-4 win to put the Waves up once again. Then, senior Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai toughed out a 7-5 first set on court six before putting down Kristin Wiley 6-3 in the second to put the team up 3-1 on the day and looking to clinch.
Sophomore Dzina Milovanovic was up to the task on court five, downing Gabby Andrews with 7-5, 6-4 set scores to clinch the match 4-1 for the Waves. With two courts still in action, Stefani picked up the upset and the Bruins won the last match in three sets on court three to end the day.
The Waves opened the afternoon with big wins on courts two and three in doubles. Pepperdine's number three-pair, Milovanovic and Lahey first downed Gabby Andrews and Kristin Wiley 6-3 to give the Waves the first advantage. The Bruins countered on court one as 4th-ranked Ena Shibahara and Jada Hart took a win over 2nd-ranked Waves' pair, senior Christine Maddox and junior Mayar Sherif, 6-4 to even the bout.
The Waves' 37th-ranked duo, Runglerdkriangkrai and Stefani, were up to the clinching task on court two. After dropping down early in the set to Terri Fleming and Alaina Miller, Pepperdine battled back to overcome the opposition with a 6-4 win to send the Waves into singles action with the 1-0 lead.
Next up for the Waves is a trip to Tempe, Ariz. for the Arizona State Invitational. Pepperdine will take on 30th-ranked Arizona State on March 3 and 2nd-ranked Ohio State on March 4.
