SPOKANE, Wash. - The Pepperdine women's basketball team fell on the road to first-place Gonzaga on Saturday, 83-61, in a West Coast Conference matchup. The teams split the regular-season series after the Waves won in Malibu earlier this year.
A hot-shooting first half by the Bulldogs was too much to overcome, as Gonzaga hit 12 threes in the first half to build a double-digit lead. Pepperdine falls to 5-16 overall, 3-7 WCC, while Gonzaga moves to 17-4, 8-2 WCC.
The Waves had four players score in double figures, getting a season-high 17 points from Paige Fecske. Jill Barta led the Zags with 17 points.
Gonzaga went up by as much as 18 points in the first half, but Pepperdine made a run and cut it to a seven-point game late in the second quarter. The Bulldogs closed the half on an 8-0 run, though, taking a 50-35 lead into the break.
Gonzaga hit 12-of-17 threes in the first half and shot 52.9% from the field through the first two quarters. The Waves won the rebounding battle against the much bigger Zags squad in the first half, 21-17.
The Bulldogs made just three 3-pointers in the second half, but dominated the boards 28-13.
The Waves were without their starting point guard, Barbara Sitanggan, who sat out the game after getting injured against Portland on Thursday. After more than holding her own against a very long Gonzaga lineup for most of the game, Megan House fouled out in the fourth quarter, leaving the already short-handed Pepperdine squad without a center.
Allie Green posted 15 points in the game, followed by Yasmine Robinson-Bacote with 13 and Sydney Bordonaro with 12. Elle Tinkle had 16 points for Gonzaga.
The Waves return home next Thursday for a 7 p.m. game against San Francisco and then head to Pacific on Saturday.
