MALIBU, California " The Pepperdine men's and women's cross country teams will run at the Capital Cross Challenge, which doubles as the NCAA West Region Preview Meet, this Saturday morning in Sacramento.
This is the first of two trips for the Waves to the Haggin Oaks Golf Complex, as they'll be back for the West Regional on November 11.
The men's 8K is at 9:35 a.m., followed by the women's 6K at 10:15 a.m. Division I schools scheduled to compete include Arizona State, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Northridge, California, Eastern Washington, Hawai'I, Long Beach State, Pacific, Sacramento State, Southern Utah, UC Davis and USC.
At last season's Capital Cross Challenge, sophomore Nick Heath (Scotts Valley, Calif./Scotts Valley HS) set the school record in the 8K and became the first Wave ever to break 25 minutes with a time of 24:58.0, which was good for fourth place overall. Heath has won each of the first two races of the season, the 5K Pepperdine Invitational on September 1 and the 8K WCC Preview Meet on September 17.
On the women's side, senior Lindsay Sheaffer (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) has been the top Wave at the season's first two races, as she came in third place at the Pepperdine Invitational and eighth at the WCC Preview Meet.
This is the third of four races before the WCC (Oct. 28) and NCAA West Region meets.
ABOUT PEPPERDINE UNIVERSITY — Pepperdine boasts a one-of-a-kind athletic department with unprecedented success for a school of its size. The Waves have won NCAA Division I championships in five different men's sports — one of just 17 schools to have accomplished this feat — and nine overall. Of this elite group, Pepperdine has the smallest undergraduate enrollment, is the only school without football and is the only university that has not been affiliated with a "major" conference. The Waves have won a total of 25 team or individual national championships in their history. Pepperdine has also earned the Division I-AAA All-Sports Trophy, an award based on postseason success that's given to the top non-football school, three times (most recently in 2011-12). Located in scenic Malibu, Calif., the university overlooks the Pacific Ocean and its campus and athletic facilities are regularly voted among the nation's most beautiful. Pepperdine, which is affiliated with the Church of Christ, ranks #50 overall on U.S. News and World Report's list of America's best colleges.
