MALIBU, California " The Pepperdine cross country teams will get an early look at the future site of the West Coast Conference Championships this Saturday morning when the Waves run at the WCC Preview Meet, which is being hosted by San Diego at Tecolote Shores North Park.
The men's 8K will start at 8 a.m., with the women's 6K to follow at 9 a.m.
In addition to Pepperdine and host San Diego, other schools scheduled to run include Cal State Fullerton, Loyola Marymount, Pacific and Valparaiso.
This will be the second race of the season, as the Waves got their season off to an early start back on September 1 with their own Pepperdine Invitational in Alumni Park. Sophomore Nick Heath (Scotts Valley, Calif./Scotts Valley HS) won the men's 5K for the second year in a row, while senior Lindsay Sheaffer (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) came in third place in the women's 4K.
Pepperdine's men are fielding a veteran team, as returners held the squad's top four finishes at the Pepperdine Invitational, as well as five of the top six. After Sheaffer, a young women's squad included seven freshmen among the team's next eight finishers.
ABOUT PEPPERDINE UNIVERSITY — Pepperdine boasts a one-of-a-kind athletic department with unprecedented success for a school of its size. The Waves have won NCAA Division I championships in five different men's sports — one of just 17 schools to have accomplished this feat — and nine overall. Of this elite group, Pepperdine has the smallest undergraduate enrollment, is the only school without football and is the only university that has not been affiliated with a "major" conference. The Waves have won a total of 25 team or individual national championships in their history. Pepperdine has also earned the Division I-AAA All-Sports Trophy, an award based on postseason success that's given to the top non-football school, three times (most recently in 2011-12). Located in scenic Malibu, Calif., the university overlooks the Pacific Ocean and its campus and athletic facilities are regularly voted among the nation's most beautiful. Pepperdine, which is affiliated with the Church of Christ, ranks #50 overall on U.S. News and World Report's list of America's best colleges.
