No. 1 Waves Sweep Cal Poly and Nebraska at Zuma

MALIBU, Calif. - The No. 1-ranked Pepperdine beach volleyball team advanced to 11-0 this Friday morning after two dominating 5-0 sweeps over Cal Poly and Nebraska at Zuma Beach.

The Waves opened the morning back home with the victory over Cal Poly, all of which were won in straight sets, before ending the day against Nebraska, of which four-of-five were won in straight sets.

On the day, the Waves posted a 23-1 overall sets record to keep the team's perfect 11-0 record untarnished. The win gives the Waves a six-match run where the team has swept the opposition with a perfect 5-0 decision.

To open the day, sophomore Corinne Quiggle (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra HS) and freshman Skylar Caputo (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) went on a quick 7-0 run to start the match with Anna Gorman and Jacqui Martin of Cal Poly, eventually finishing the first set off with a powerful 21-9 win. The duo then worked to a solid 15-3 lead late in the second set, eventually defeating the opposition with a 21-5 decision. Quiggle led the effort with 16 kills and six aces in the match, while Caputo ended with six kills and five aces towards the win.

Then on court four, freshmen pair Madalyn Roh (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral HS) and Anika Wilson (Santa Barbara, Calif./San Marcos HS) brought the Waves' lead up to 2-0 with a win over CPSLO's Casey Carroll and Bailey Roach. The duo worked ahead in the first set, breaking away late in the set to amass a 21-11 win. The pair then finished out the win with a monster 21-6 victory. Roh finished with 12 kills and four blocks in the match, while Wilson was good for 10 kills and six aces.

Senior Samantha Cash (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy) and junior Sarah Seiber (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS/Arizona) continued the Waves' domination with a 21-7, 21-10 win over Shannon Fouts and Maddie McCool on court five. Cash finished the match with 18 kills and only two attack errors, adding three blocks and three aces to the effort and Seiber ended with 12 kills and three aces for the win.

Furthering the Pepperdine lead with a 21-13, 21-14 victory on court two were junior Delaney Knudsen (Valencia, Calif./Valencia HS) and freshman Kaity Bailey (Ojai, Calif./Villanova Preparatory School), as the pair put down Adlee Van Winden and Raeann Greisen. Bailey led the effort with eight blocks and added seven kills and Knudsen posted 12 kills with only two attack errors and added three aces.

Senior Taylor Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) and freshman Heidi Dyer (San Clemente, Calif./Saddleback Valley Christian HS) were the last to finish the first match on court one, beating Taylor Nelson and Savannah Niemen. The duo went nearly point-for-point at the beginning of the first set, but broke away early and maintained the lead throughout. The team won the first set 21-18 before finishing off the second set with a 21-15 score for the victory. Racich led the pair with 21 kills and five aces. Dyer was good for seven kills in the effort as well.

Junior Leanna Schroeder (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) and freshman Nikki Lyons (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas HS) also played on court six, picking up a 21-7 and 21-14 final decision for the win.

The second match of the day was equally exciting for the Waves as the team once again swept the opposition. Cash and Seiber began the winning ways with a 21-14, 21-5 win over Mikaela Foecke and Sydney Townsend. Cash led the duo with 18 kills, five blocks and both she and Seiber tabbed two aces. Sieber also added six kills. With the win, the pair now owns an 11-0 record on the season thus far.

The Waves went up 2-0 again with the success of Roh and Wilson on court four, as the duo defeated Kenzie Malone and Briana Holman with a 21-17, 21-10 victory. Roh ended with a commanding five blocks and 14 kills and Wilson was good for nine kills. The duo also still sports a perfect 11-0 record on the 2016 campaign.

The next to finish, bringing the Waves up 3-0 on the afternoon, were Racich and Dyer who finished with a 21-16, 21-19 win over Nebraska's Kadie Rolfzen and Kelly Hunter. Dyer led the team with 11 kills and five blocks, while Racich ended with nine kills and two aces. Racich and Dyer are now 10-1 in the 2016 campaign, all of which have been played in the number one position.

On court two, Bailey and Knudsen then defeated Amber Rolfzen and Justine Wong-Orantes with a 21-15, 21-18 final result. The pair is now 9-2 in the 2016 season. Knudsen led the team with 20 kills and three aces and Bailey finished the second match of the day with nine kills and one block.

Last to finish on court three were Caputo and Quiggle who finished by defeating Anni Albrecht and Olivia Boender in three sets with 21-19, 18-21 and 15-9 final marks to advance their record to 10-1 on the season. Quiggle led the team with an outstanding 31 kills, while adding two aces and Caput ended with five aces, seven kills and one block throughout the match.

Lyons and Schroeder also played on court six, defeating Tiani Reeves and Brooke Smith with a 21-7 and 21-5 final decision.
