SUNNYVALE, California " The Pepperdine cross country teams got in their final tune-up ahead of the West Coast Conference Championships as the Waves ran at Santa Clara's Bronco Invitational on Saturday.
"Our last two weeks were our hardest training of the season, and we weren't tapering, so some of our runners felt that today," Pepperdine Coach Robert Radnoti said. "That's okay because we'll be tapering as we enter the championship season. We had a lot of PRs today and a lot of people who ran where they've been or a little bit better. All in all it was a good race to cap off the regular season, and everyone will be primed for a good WCC meet in two weeks."
The WCC Championships will be hosted by San Diego on October 28.
As usual, sophomore Nick Heath (Scotts Valley, Calif./Scotts Valley HS) had a very impressive showing, finishing 12th out of 173 runners in the men's 8K. His time of 24:07.2 was less than a second off his school-record time set two weeks ago.
Senior Ben Fox (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain HS) placed 65th with a time of 24:59.5. Unfortunately redshirt junior Nick Blanchard (Portland, Conn./Portland HS), also one of the team's top runners, pulled out midway through the race, which probably cost the Waves a few spots in the final standings. The Waves' other scorers were freshman Treet Allison (Canyon, Texas/Canyon HS), senior Torin Wile (Beverly Hills, Mich./Brother Rice HS) and freshman Jalen Frantal (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central HS), all of whom posted PRs in an 8K.
In the women's 6K Invitational, senior Lindsay Sheaffer (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) ran close to her fastest-ever time, clocking 21:35.1 to finish 42nd out of 170 runners. She was followed by sophomore Elise Froebe (Lake Forest Park, Wash./Shorecrest HS), freshman Samantha Maness (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton HS), freshman Bri Wilson (Murrieta, Calif./Linfield Christian School) and freshman Lupita Perez (Fillmore, Calif./Fillmore HS). Froebe, Maness and Perez also had PRs.
The men finished in 16th place and the women were 19th.
