MALIBU, Calif. -- The Pepperdine cross country teams will race for the second time this season when the Waves head south to compete in San Diego State's Aztec Invitational on Friday morning.
The event will be held at the Mission Bay Tecolote Shores North Park. The men's 8K will be at 8:30 a.m., followed by the women's 5K at 9:30 a.m. Twelve men's and 16 women's schools will be represented from all levels. Among Division I schools, the Pepperdine women will compete against host SDSU, San Diego, UNLV and USC, while the men will square off against San Diego.
It's the first time Pepperdine has competed in this particular event since 2004.
The Waves opened the season at home back on September 1 as the men took on Cal State Northridge and the women faced both CSUN and CSU Bakersfield in Alumni Park. Freshman Nick Heath (Scotts Valley, Calif./Scotts Valley HS) and sophomore Nick Blanchard (Portland, Conn./Portland HS) finished 1-2 in the men's 5K as the Waves defeated the Matadors. On the women's side, Pepperdine beat CSUB but fell to CSUN, and senior Katie Engel (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima HS) and junior Elle Lemco (San Jose, Calif./Prospect HS) placed second and third, respectively.
After San Diego, the Waves' third race will be the Sacramento Jamboree on October 3.
