Cutura, Maddox Bow Out at NCAA Doubles Championship

WACO, Texas -- The season came to a close for Matea Cutura and Christine Maddox of the Pepperdine women's tennis team today at the NCAA Doubles Championship. The duo suffered defeat in the round of 16 to finish their year with a 15-4 record.

Cutura (Zagreb, Croatia/Gimnazija Birotehnika/DePaul) and Maddox (Santa Monica, Calif./Santa Monica HS), armed with a ranking of #23, faced #18 Ashleigh Antal and Astra Sharma of Vanderbilt. Antal and Sharma led the Commodores to the NCAA team championship title just three days prior.

Although Antal and Sharma got on the board first with a 6-1 win in set one, Cutura and Maddox broke serve early in the second and went on to win by a 6-1 tally.

The deciding frame fell in favor of Vanderbilt, who jumped out to a 4-1 lead. The Waves narrowed the gap to 4-2 with a break of serve, but Antal and Sharma were able to close out the match in the next two games.

Cutura and Maddox conclude their successful year together with a 15-4 record, including five win over ranked opponents. The Waves earned wins during the regular season over UCLA's Robin Anderson and Channel Van Nguyen (currently #31), as well as Cal's Zsofi Susanyi and Klara Fabikova (currently #5).

Yesterday, Cutura and Maddox opened the NCAA Doubles Championship with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 triumph over #37 Alyssa Hibberd and Anki Wind of Memphis.

2015 marks the fourth-consecutive year Pepperdine has sent a doubles team into the round of 16 at the NCAA Doubles Championship.
