MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's tennis team swept this week's installment of the West Coast Conference Player of the Week awards. Lorraine Guillermo was honored for her success in singles, while Matea Cutura and Christine Maddox were dubbed the doubles team of the week.
The Waves, ranked #30 at the time and now up to #18, upset #17 TCU last week in Malibu. Pepperdine dropped the doubles point before delivering its most dominant singles performance of the season. The Waves gave up just 13 games total across the six singles matches, led by Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS).
Guillermo, 18-4 on the season and currently ranked #30 in singles, topped then-#76 Stefani Tan, 6-2, 6-0
Cutura (Zagreb, Croatia/Gimnazija Birotehnika/DePaul) and Maddox (Santa Monica, Calif./Santa Monica HS) also won in singles to lift Pepperdine to victory, but it was their work together on the doubles court that earned them their first WCC Doubles Team of the Week award.
The duo won in their first-ever doubles match together, dispatching Alexis Pereira and Palina Dubavets by a 6-3 tally last week Monday. It was Maddox's team-best third doubles win of the dual season, while it was Cutura's first.
The win over #17 TCU was Pepperdine's first over a top-20 opponent this season. It came on the heels of their first win of the year over a top-25 opponent, having defeated #25 Texas just two days prior.
The Waves gear up for two matches this week against a pair of Pac-12 opponents. Pepperdine first hosts #11-ranked UCLA on Friday at 1:30 p.m. before hitting the road to face #32 Arizona State on Sunday.
