MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine cross country teams will be back in action on Saturday (Sept. 13) in their second meet of the season. It's an important one as the West Coast Conference Preview will be hosted by Santa Clara in Sunnyvale, Calif.
Competitors will get their first look this year at the WCC Championships course at Baylands Park, though it's also the site of the annual Bronco Invitational that Santa Clara hosts and that the Waves have attended in the past.
"We've been continuing our season-long efforts to prepare for the end of the season and the WCC Championships, and this is just one step along the way," Pepperdine Coach Robert Radnoti said. "The WCC Preview meet is our chance to go up to Santa Clara and see the course, and try some things that will help improve our standing at the end of the year. Our training continues to go really nicely and our top athletes have been improving."
The men's 8k will start at 9 a.m. and the women's 6k will follow at 9:45 a.m.
At the season opener almost two weeks ago at the Mark Covert Classic, junior Katie Engel (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima HS) was the top Pepperdine runner on the women's side and freshman Kevin Maeda (Highland, Calif./Citrus Valley HS) was the top men's competitor.
"Our men's team just consists of freshmen and sophomores and training is really going well," Radnoti said. "A couple of our top guys are banged up a little bit and hopefully we'll get them back really soon. Our women's team is coming along. We've got to get our 4-5-6-7 runners a little bit closer to our top three. Our top three are really solid."
