MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine cross country teams have their final tune-up prior to the West Coast Conference Championships this Saturday (Oct. 18) when the Waves run at UC Riverside's Highlander Invitational.
The race will be held on the UCR Agricultural Operations Course, with the men's 6K at 8 a.m. and the women's 5K to follow at 8:30 a.m.
It's the fourth meet of the regular season. The Waves will have had three weeks since their last race, the Stanford Invitational, on Sept. 27. It's the last event until the WCC Championships, which will be hosted by Santa Clara on Nov. 1 in Sunnyvale, Calif.
Among the other Division I schools expected to compete at UC Riverside are Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Northridge, Long Beach State, San Diego State, UC Irvine and USC.
"Training has been really good," Pepperdine Coach Robert Radnoti said. "I'm excited about the three weeks we've had, it was two weeks of really intense training and one week to recover a little bit and to get ready for Saturday ... We're really looking for some good performances here. It's a flat, fast course and I think we'll have some good times."
Junior Katie Engel (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima HS) has been the women's top runner at each of the first three meets of the season (and at seven of the last nine dating back to the 2013 season). Freshman Kevin Maeda (Highland, Calif./Citrus Valley HS) had led the men twice and fellow freshman Rudy Gonzalez (Whittier, Calif./California HS) has done it once.
